Trip Description
Thonburi is the western part of Bangkok, situated on the right side of the Chao Phraya River. Its many canals had originally given Bangkok the name “Venice of the East.” Passing by boat along the canals gives you a first hand impression of the scenic life along Bangkok’s waterways. Also visit the Royal Barges and the Temple of Dawn.
Thonburi Klongs
Thonburi Klongs A cruise along the Chao Phraya River - the city's lifeblood - and the canals of Thonburi on the east side of the river, reveals scenes at odds with the bustling, modern inner city. As concrete monstrosities give way to urban scenes of temples and wooden houses, visitors get a glimpse of the serene and simple lifestyle of riverbank dwellers. This picturesque view, best at sunset, is what earned Bangkok the title of "Venice of the East." En route, stop at the Royal Barges Museum and Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn).
The Temple of Dawn
Wat Arun Rising majestically on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River, the Temple of Dawn can be reached from Arun Amarin Road in Thonburi or by boat from the Tha Tien Pier near Wat Pho. The present temple was built during the 19th century on the site of the Royal Chapel of King Taksin, which dates from the 17th century.
Royal Barges Museum
Royal Barges Museum Traditional life has persisted along the waterways, and boats prevail as the most convenient form of transportation. Many royal ceremonies and important festivals made history along the Chao Phraya River, which has always been central Thailand's main source of life and transport.
The royal barges are long, ornate boats used in ceremonial processions on the river. The largest is 50 meters long and requires a rowing crew of 50 men. The most important barge is the Suphannahong (the fourth one in the picture almost hidden behind the third), which is the king's personal barge. It is made from a single piece of timber and has a swan head carved into the bow.
